The Annual Conference of the AbuSulayman Center for Global Islamic Studies will be held on the Fairfax, VA campus of George Mason Mason University and in hybrid format over a two day period in mid-April, 2025. Exact conference dates along with the conference keynote speaker(s) will be announced in early January. Accepted papers will be notified in early February.
On Tuesday, December 14,at 4:00pm in Barco Law 229 (Alcoa Room) Faisal Al Mutar will lead a discussion, “Civil War to Civil Discourse: Lessons from the Middle East for Syria.” Al Mutar will draw on his experiences in his native Iraq during a period of conflict and reflect on the challenges of fostering democracy, education, and civil discourse in Syria and the Middle East. He will also explore the broader implications of his efforts to support education, innovation, and civil society in a region marked by conflict and instability.
Join ISPU on January 15 at 12 p.m. EST for an engaging panel discussion examining the political events that shaped the Muslim community over the past year and exploring the role they will play in the political system moving forward.

The Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (ACMCU) is hosting Dr. Fawaz Gerges, Professor of International Relations and Chair in Contemporary Middle Eastern Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science, for a talk titled “Syria’s Morning After: A Counterrevolution?” on January 16th at Noon in the CCAS Boardroom.
Georgetown Faculty and Staff for Justice in Palestine, the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the Arabic and Islamic Studies Department, and the Disability Studies Program will host a screening and critical discussion with director Rehab Nazzal. This event features Nazzal’s short films, Vibrations from Gaza and Canada Park, followed by a dialogue with the director and two interdisciplinary panelists specializing in ecology and disability studies.

The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies invites you to a lecture by Dr. Toby Dodge, Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics. Dr. Toby Dodge will present on interviewing techniques for qualitative research, and how collecting data through interviews has shaped his work throughout his career. Dr. Dodge will specifically discuss Iraq as a case study. This lecture is part of the required CCAS curriculum in the course Studying the Arab World. This talk will be moderated by Dr. Joseph Sassoon.

In this talk, Katherine Blouin will share some reflections on how some questions have informed the 2024 Routledge Handbook of Classics, Colonialism and Postcolonial Theory. Blouin will also reflect on what the last year has taught her about the intimate relationship between ancient history and modern settler colonialism, the moral duties of critical historians, and the disruptive potential of public-facing scholarship.

CCAS Professor Dr. Marwa Daoudy will be in conversation with prominent Syrian intellectual and dissident, Yassin Al-Haj Saleh, and prominent Syrian activist Muzna Dureid to discuss the birth of a new Syria and the hopes and challenges lying ahead for Syrians.
